What are HDU Signs?

What are HDU Signs?

Here’s what you need to know about high-density urethane signs, or HDU signs, and why it’s an excellent material to use for your business signage!

HDU signs are signs made out of high-density urethane. Many signs are made of this material due to its durability and versatile use in various sign constructions. HDU signs work wonderfully for anything from dimensional letters and signs to monument signs. Further, HDU signs are the perfect option for businesses and organizations looking to create the look of a hand-carved sign at a fraction of the cost of genuine wood-carved signs. High Mountain Signs can help craft your unique HDU sign for your building or landscape!

Material Composition of HDU Signs

High-density urethane is made from a mix of chemicals that form a rigid, closed-cell foam material. Compared to other foam materials, such as styrofoam, HDU is much more robust and dense, which makes it a versatile substrate for various designs and treatments. This material is both waterproof and impervious to petroleum-based solvents. Business owners need not worry about environmental damages to their HDU signs that could warp or peel their investment.

Sign Production and Details

HDU can be worked in many ways wood can: sandblasted, routed, hand, or machine carved. Textured frames can be applied so the background can replicate the look of different finishes, such as woodgrain, pebbled, smooth, and even the look of stone. V-cut or V-grooved letters are etched letterings that look hand-carved into the material. Conversely, the sign can be routed to achieve the look of raised lettering instead. Afterward, the sign gets finished in latex paint and even metal foils to make any lettering or logos stand out.

Alternative to Wood Signs

Whereas carved wood signs cost more to make and are easily damaged by constant weather exposure, HDU signs can replicate the look at a lower price point while outlasting wood signs. Even sealed wood can expand and shrink with the changes in temperature and exposure to water. Large wood panels are typically made from several planks of wood, which the seams are more likely to show with age and wear. HDU signs come in much larger pieces while remaining lighter than most wood signs, resulting in an easier material to work with then install.
